We worked long hours with Nile to develop the user-testing and eye-tracking, and also with the Digital Accessibility Centre to ensure that the site conforms to the accepted norms for those with any form of disability.

Spider worked in partnership with one of the world’s largest businesses, Tata Consultancy Services, under contract to the Scottish Improvement Service, on this innovative new venture, myaccount.

myaccount is the secure and easy way to access online public services in Scotland.  It allows members of the public living in Scotland to set up a secure online account, and use it to access a growing range of online public services provided by service providers such as councils and health boards.

The public can update their online account themselves, personalise content and manage their own services online without the need to contact the service provider for further information.

Clearly, when you are dealing with, in effect, the entire adult population, any website has to be simple, efficient and effective.  Our remit was the front-end design, so Spider was directly responsible for the user interface.  We worked long hours with Nile to develop the user-testing and eye-tracking, and also with the Digital Accessibility Centre to ensure that the site conforms to the accepted norms for those with any form of disability.

Although transactions, such as council tax payments, housing rents etc., were the obvious place to start, myaccount has the capability to be used for virtually any service provided to the public.  Bin collections, library books, councillors’ surgeries and many more will be brought within the scope of myaccount in due course.

The City of Edinburgh Council was the first local authority to use myaccount sign-in from May 2014, and the response from the public has been exceptional.  Thousands have signed up and are happily using their own, personalised citizen’s account; a result which, in no small way, is due to the care and attention taken by Spider and its partners at the project’s outset.

Policy-backed and funded by the Scottish Government, myaccount is managed and operated by the Improvement Service.
